The Dermal Filler Procedure: What to Expect
Over 9 million dermal filler treatments are performed each year in the U.S. In West Palm Beach and the surrounding Riviera Beach area, these cosmetic treatments continue to grow in popularity. At our med spa, we focus on making sure you feel comfortable, confident, and cared for from start to finish.
Your first step is a detailed consultation. We evaluate your facial features, discuss your goals, and create a personalized treatment plan designed for natural-looking results in West Palm Beach and the Riviera Beach area.
This step is essential to ensure your treatment fits your facial structure and delivers balanced, long-lasting improvements.
After your treatment, you’ll notice results almost immediately with minimal downtime. Some mild redness, swelling, or bruising may occur and usually resolves within a few days.
We recommend avoiding makeup for the first 12 hours and limiting sun exposure, saunas, and steam rooms for up to two weeks. Applying an ice pack can also help reduce swelling.
For best results, wait at least seven days before treating the same area again. With proper care, dermal filler results may last up to 18 months, and yearly touch-ups can help maintain your look.

Longevity and Maintenance of Dermal Filler Results
Dermal filler results may last from several months to up to two years, depending on the product used and your body’s natural response. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane typically last between 6 and 12 months, while biostimulatory fillers like Sculptra may last up to two years. Results can also vary based on the treatment area, with some areas maintaining volume longer than others.
Fillers have different lifespans, including:
- Restylane Silk: 4–6 months
- Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus: 9–12 months
- Restylane Lyft and Contour: Up to 12 months
- Juvederm Voluma: 9–15 months
- Radiesse: 9–12 months
- Sculptra: 24+ months
To maintain optimal results, touch-up treatments are often recommended every 9 to 12 months. Lip fillers may require more frequent maintenance. Using high-quality skincare products, including antioxidants, sunscreen, moisturizers, and retinol, can also help extend your results.
The longevity of dermal fillers may be influenced by factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and treatment volume. Individuals with faster metabolisms may notice shorter-lasting results. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, staying hydrated, protecting your skin from sun exposure, and avoiding smoking can help prolong your outcomes.
Combining Dermal Fillers with Other Cosmetic Treatments
At our West Palm Beach medical spa, we combine different treatments to enhance your appearance and deliver longer-lasting results. Dermal fillers are often paired with complementary procedures for more balanced, natural-looking outcomes.
Botox and Dermal Fillers
Many patients choose Botox and dermal fillers together to address multiple signs of aging. Botox helps relax dynamic wrinkles, while fillers restore lost volume and smooth deeper lines. This combination may last up to 9 to 10 months, providing longer-lasting results than using either treatment alone.
Skin Rejuvenation Treatments
We often recommend combining dermal fillers with advanced skin treatments for optimal results. These may include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser procedures to improve skin texture and tone. This comprehensive approach helps enhance facial beauty from every angle.
| Treatment | Duration | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| JUVÉDERM® | Up to 2 years | Immediate volume enhancement |
| Sculptra® Aesthetic | Over 2 years | Gradual collagen stimulation |
| Botox® + Fillers | 9–10 months | Comprehensive wrinkle reduction |
Our experienced injectors can design a personalized plan using BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM®, or Restylane® to achieve exceptional results. These customized combinations not only improve outcomes but may also offer long-term value.
Are You a Good Candidate for Dermal fillers?
To determine whether dermal fillers are right for you, consider the following factors:
- Age and Skin Condition:
Ideal candidates are typically adults experiencing signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of facial volume. Many patients in their late 20s and older choose fillers to maintain or restore a youthful appearance. - Overall Health:
Candidates should be in good general health without serious medical conditions that may affect healing or increase the risk of complications. Be sure to share your medical history and current medications with your provider. - Realistic Expectations:
Understanding what dermal fillers can and cannot achieve is important. While fillers can significantly enhance appearance, they are not a substitute for surgical procedures. - Non-Smokers:
Non-smokers or individuals willing to quit smoking often experience better results and reduced risk of complications, as smoking can affect skin quality and healing. - Skin Type and Condition:
Healthy skin that is not severely damaged or excessively sagging tends to respond best to treatment. Fillers are most effective for moderate to severe wrinkles, fine lines, and volume loss. - No Allergies or Sensitivities:
It is important to have no known allergies to filler ingredients. Some individuals may be sensitive to certain substances used in injectable products.
If you meet these criteria and are interested in improving facial contours, smoothing wrinkles, or restoring volume to areas such as the cheeks and lips, you may be a good candidate for dermal fillers. A consultation with a qualified professional will help determine the best treatment plan for your individual goals.
Post-Treatment Instructions for Dermal Fillers
- TIMING: It takes roughly 4 weeks for full results of dermal fillers to become apparent. Please be patient. Not only are swelling and bruising common after treatment, but dermal filler takes time to rehydrate and attract water molecules to create a soft, natural result.
- DURATION: Dermal fillers typically last anywhere between 6 months and 2 years. The duration of effect depends on the type of dermal filler used, where on your face it was injected, how expressive your face is, and your metabolic rate, and genetics. After repeated use of dermal fillers, many of our patients find that they have nice results that last even longer than expected because hyaluronic acid (collagen) based dermal fillers stimulate your body’s own collagen supply.
- POSITION: The night of your treatment, sleep with your head elevated on 2 pillows, lying on your back. For the following 2 weeks, sleep on your back. Do not rub or massage the treated areas after your treatment unless your injector has instructed you to do so.
- AVOID: Do not perform strenuous exercise on the day of your treatment. You can resume all normal activities the next day. Avoid facials or saunas for 6 weeks after your treatment. Feel free to shower and go about most other regular daily activities. Avoid wearing makeup or any facial products within 45 minutes after your treatment unless injector advises differently.
- SWELLING/ BRUISING: Any tiny bumps or needle marks will go away within a few hours. Bruises or residual marks are common and may be covered with makeup, but please wait for 2 hours and use a gentle touch to avoid rubbing the treated area.
Please know that our injector takes great care to ensure meticulous symmetry with microdroplet injection. Even still, it is common for temporary bruising and swelling to appear asymmetric in the initial period after injection.
This Is temporary and will go away on its own. If you witness blanching of the skin or redness accompanied by pain or blueish grayish/darkish hue and/or numbness in or around the area injected after 2 hours, please contact the office immediately at (786) 305-6737.
In addition, if you are experiencing a noticeable change in skin temperature compared to the surrounding the skin, please contact the office immediately. If you experience visual disturbances seek medical attention immediately.
Non-Surgical Nose Job – You cannot wear glasses or anything on the bridge of your nose for at least 10 weeks or longer, until the filler settles.
Avoid getting dental work done for at least 2 weeks. If the tip of the nose was raised, you must avoid smiling or laughing for the next 2 weeks.Be very cautious when applying makeup and/or washing your face, cleaning your nose and putting on clothing.
Lips – Avoid sipping/drinking from a straw, smoking, getting dental work done, and harsh kissing for at least 2 weeks.
- ALCOHOL/ BLOOD THINNERS: Drinking excessive alcohol within 2 days of treatment or using blood thinners such as Advil and Aspirin can increase your risk of bruising. If you would like to take pain killers Tylenol is recommended.
- COLD SORES: If you have had cold sores or oral herpetic infection in the past, any treatment to your face can trigger reactivation. We recommend taking an antiviral medication such as Acyclovir in advance of your treatment and for several days afterward to reduce this risk. If this applies to you, please discuss with your injector.
- FOLLOW UP: Please schedule your follow up visit for 6-12 months from today to ensure best results of long-term facial rejuvenation. You may schedule your follow up visit in person, via email, or over the phone. If you allow your dermal fillers to completely wear off, it is more difficult for our Get Refreshed Practitioners to evaluate how your individual facial features reacted to your prior treatment.
